Fish Dish Ideas: British and Japanese Flavors

Fish Dish Ideas in the UK: Salmon and Avocado Rice Bowl
Life in the UK

Fish Dish Ideas in the UK from a Japanese Dietitian

Honestly, I thought that I would have to give up getting nutrients from fish, except for the famous fish & chips in the UK. However, I found plenty of fish options even at local supermarkets. Today, I would like to introduce my favorite fish dishes from when I lived in the UK.

Salmon and Avocado Sushi Bowl

I know that some supermarkets offer their own sushi bowls that are well-made and tasty, but I sometimes missed the homemade ones from Japan.

Here is the best product I ever found in the UK for making a homemade sushi bowl:

Salmon at a supermarket

There is a similar product at other supermarkets like Lidl, which I used most often. The included mustard and honey sauce, in particular, goes really well with sushi rice.

Here is a quick recipe:

  1. In a bowl, place some sushi rice and sprinkle torn nori (seaweed sheets).
  2. Place chopped avocado and salmon on the rice, then sprinkle chopped spring onion on top.
  3. Serve with the mustard and honey sauce and add soy sauce if you like.

Sautéed Salmon

Here is a quick recipe:

  1. Prepare salmon fillets and remove the scales properly using the tip of a knife.
  2. Pat the fillets dry with a paper towel, then sprinkle with salt and pepper, and coat them with rice flour.
  3. Sauté the salmon until crispy, serve with a side of mayonnaise.

Coating the salmon with rice flour makes the fish crispy after sautéing.

Salmon Gratin

I also love British salmon pie as one of the fish options, but gratin is more similar to Japanese cuisine here.

A Japanese-style gratin usually includes macaroni, which is super popular with both children and adults. It becomes much healthier if you add a variety of vegetables and mushrooms.

Fishcake

Fishcake, Salad, Rice, and Miso Soup

Maybe it’s surprising that Japanese people find a sense of home in British fishcakes but let me explain why! It’s because they are similar to croquettes, which are one of the most popular dinner mains in Japan.

I recommend adding some tonkatsu sauce to the fishcakes. Just be careful not to use too much, as it become quite salty.

Did you find a favorite amongst these options? I’d be so happy if you enjoy these ideas.
